ATV Music was put up for sale in 1985 by Robert Holmes à Court, it’s owner at the time. ATV owned the rights to 251 songs from the Beatles catalogue along with 4ooo other songs, with bidders including Richard Branson and Marty Bandier also wanting to purchase ATV.
It was reported that Michael Jackson offered $40 million to Holmes à Court which was turned down because he want more money. When speaking about the songs Jackson said “You can’t put a price on a Picasso … you can’t put a price on these songs, there’s no value on them”.
In August 1985 Michael Jackson purchased ATV Music for $47.5 million.
