The Smallest Creature is the stage name used by Stefanos Marnerides, when he began playing the underground rock scene in New York City in 2007. In 2011, Marnerides signed with Fishbone Records and began working in earnest with previous collaborators Stephanos Nicolaou and Iacovos Stylianides on recording their first rash of songs. Four singles will be released in the coming months, and the first of this series released on July 26 and is called “Reboot”.
“Reboot” is written and performed with many different styles of indie rock in a sort of round robin style. It begins acoustic with sort of a softer indie style, but then builds to a more heavy, almost metal-inspired second section. The tune picks up more elements along the meandering musical dialogue, culminating in a shockingly well-done guitar solo, before it’s denouement takes it back to the original acoustic structure. The overall effect is haunting, diverse and most of all highly emotive. “Reboot” was thus a good choice for the band to release first, as it shows the songwriting and compositional range of Marnerides and the talent of his two bandmates. The track portends good things for subsequent releases.
The Smallest Creature’s second single, “Copenhagen”, released last week on their Soundcloud Page and they will have two more singles out on Fishbone in the next month. The video for “Reboot” appears below.
