Hello Music News Site. This is Amit (guitar/vocals/samples) from Ex Libras. Hope you’re well.

  1. Where and when did you first discover your interest in music?

I was recently looking back through a series of emails written between a friend and I a few years ago. I was collaborating with her on a theatre production at the time. She wrote a play about water moving through the body and I was composing some music to accompany the performance. She asked me about my own personal thoughts about music’s affects on atmosphere and the body and I wrote that ‘sound is the most charming thing I’d encountered whilst being on this planet.’ Whilst, in itself, being a strange thing to say it got me thinking again about how ‘charmed’ I am by sounds. I’m the guy sitting with a cup of tea that has a spoon in it, staring absently at the light reflecting onto the wall through the window. The spoon slides across the lip of the mug and makes an odd scratch and clink, and then that’s it… I’m now the guy holding a cup of tea to his ear whilst flicking the spoon inside the mug listening to the potential sounds it can make, eventually beating the mug with the spoon and nodding my head back and forth. So I’ve always been interested in sound, and music, to me, is just the organisation of sounds. So I guess I’ve always been interested in music. And now I’m using musical instruments to make sounds. And yes… it was hard to give up the mug and spoon.

  1. What are your main ambitions in the industry?

First to survive. Then to succeed.

  1. When did you start writing your own songs/music?

Our very first rehearsal was a 4-hour long improvisation. We didn’t know what would happen playing with each other as we all had different musical backgrounds, styles, influences. We recorded it all on mini-disc. Listened back to it once and thought… that was good. What would happen if we did that again? Then the rehearsal room we were using closed down so we built a studio to rehearse in together in a disused shed, now our HQ – creatively called ‘the SHED’. Everything we do is a combined effort through the 3 of us working together equally. It isn’t always smooth, but the results are always better than what any one of us could’ve done alone.

  1. What would you say is your music career highlight to date?

I would have to say when we won the mercury, performed at Sónar and, would you believe it, scored a film that was nominated for an oscar?! And not forgetting that time at the NME awards bash where Kieran started to walk up to the stage but he forgo… … ah, you meant music career highlight that isn’t imaginary. Awkward.

  1. Who will we hear in your songs? What are your influences?

Umm… errr…. so…. yeah… well…. Next question…? No? Answer this one…?

[It’s hard to see the faces through the glare of the spotlight shining on Amit’s face but he can tell they aren’t amused]

It’s a tough question. People hear lot’s of different things because they bring their own music history to the experience. We’ve been described as Red Hot Chilli Peppers meets DJ Shadow, or Nirvana meets Radiohead, Rage Against the Machine meets Jeff Buckley, Cinematic Orchestra meets Battles. All of which are too lofty praise. I think it’d be fair to say we walk a similar line to a lot of UK alternative and independent music. We’re alternative rock, with elements of hip-hop and post-rock, and classical/film music sensibilities.

  1. What’s the most important thing you’d want to tell people about your current release?

I actually lost my virginity by track 4… well, misplaced. I swear I left it by the stairs somewhere. Anyway, I stopped looking by track 6, wept halfway through track 7, and by track 10 someone else gave me theirs… Or returned mine… It was a confusing 50-odd minutes.

  1. Who else can you recommend from your genre or local area for people to have a listen to?

Some of these bands have split up but it is worth hunting down their music. These are people from our area or people who we’ve been lucky enough to share a stage with  and musically complimented each other – Anison, Gin Panic, Silent Front, They Died Too Young, Meet Me In St Louis, Kidnapped Kids, November Fleet, Three Colours, Carl White, St. Spirit, Airhammer, Tubelord, Rohame, Hoar, Quiet Choir, Nitkowsi, Shield Your Eyes, One Unique Signal.

  1. Any gigs coming up?

We’ll be playing at The Barfly, Camden on 20th February. We have the new record coming out this summer, so we will most definitely be playing live throughout the year – and when we play live we play hard. Checking our website, Facebook, twitter, instagram will most likely let you know of any upcoming dates as they happen. We will endeavour to keep the world informed.
