1. Where and when did you first discover your interest in music?

I always grew up from a really early age listening to my dad’s Beatles and Stones vinyl. When bands like the Chili Peppers, Rage and Nirvana came on the scene I was just coming into my teens and they changed my life. That got me into garage, grunge and punk and listening to bands like the Clash, Iggy & the Stooges, Bowie and T Rex too.

2. What are your main ambitions in the industry?

To be honest we’re just trying to put out music we love and play, play, play. If something happens that’s great but we’re out for a ride and if we get passengers and people along for it all that’s great – if not we’re still happy doing what we do – writing music and playing live. Too many bands try to be something they’re not these days to conform to what sells and it’s polluting an already pretty filthy industry.

My previous band had a big indie label deal and it did us no favours at all – we just racked up a massive debt recording with big producers, etc etc etc – which was fun at the time, but a steep learning curve when you have to earn shit loads of money before you can eat!

That’s why The Kicks have always been DIY so we have control over what we write, where we play and how we connect with our fans.

3. When did you start writing your own songs/music?

When I was about 15 I started playing the saxophone – not very rock n roll I know (although Bowie did too, so that’s ok)

I then broke two fingers on my right hand when I was 17, so realised that my saxophone days were numbered for a while – I picked up a guitar and started writing songs straight away – and that was that. Plus I found you get more girls when you sing with a guitar in hand rather than a saxpohone stuffed in your gob – although I’m sure Kenny G has done alright…..

4. What would you say is your music career highlight to date?

With the Kicks definitely touring in the US and Canada and playing SXSW and the Canadian Music Fest was amazing, as was playing a headline show at Koko – we started behind a screen and as soon as the drums kicked in the whole place erupted – was a pretty special moment!

5. Who will we hear in your songs? What are your influences?

Nirvana, The Hives, The Stooges, The Clash, The White Stripes, The Stones, QOTSA, Misfits – all bands we love and aspire to incorporate into our songs as influences.

6. What’s the most important thing you’d want to tell people about your current release?

It’s been a labour of love and has taken a while to get recorded – 4 different sessions in total as there were band ups and downs, misfits and bust ups! We decided to strip it back for a really raw live feel, as felt our first album was overproduced. We’re happy with the result and it was worth the effort and patience.

7. Who else can you recommend from your genre or local area for people to have a listen to?

From the London scene The Graveltones are a great band we know who are doing really well at the moment. Also you must hear the Canadian band Reignwolf – we met Jordan at the Canadian Music Fest and he is fucking amazing!

8. Any gigs coming up?

O2 Academy Islington on 5th June
12 Bar Club, Denmark Street, London – 20th June

We should also be playing a few festivals this summer and will be touring in the US and Latin America in early autumn, as are just working out a deal there at the moment.

9. Where can we find/follow you online?
