Artist name: REMEMBERING AUGUST
Release name: Single‘STAY’ / ‘BROTHER’ EP
Release date: 20TH OCTOBER / 10TH NOVEMBER
1. Where and when did you first discover your interest in music?
Jessie: I went to theatre school from the age of 3 – i’ve always loved singing and dancing and picked up my first instrument (piano) when i was 5. I then went onto guitar at 11. I taught myself the majority of what i know and i also taught myself how to read music at 7.
Luke: I remember being with my Father a lot and he would always play Bruce Springsteen in the car – I remember listening to his album ‘Nebraska’ and thinking that I want to write songs like that. I started learning guitar and songwriting at 14.
2. What are your main ambitions in the industry?
We would just love to be going out somewhere casually and for someone to come up to us and say they love our music. That really is why we are doing this. It is such an honour when an audience member comes up to us after we’ve played a gig and says how much they enjoyed listening to our lyrics. Even if its the smallest gig with the loudest audience – comments like that make everything worth it.
3. When did you start writing your own songs/music?
Jessie: I started writing ‘Mickey Mouse’ songs on the keyboard when i was about 6/7. I always used to write these cheesy songs then go running into the house to show my parents. I’ve just always done it from a young age.
Luke: I started writing from about 14. I used to use it as a way to pull girls in school (ha ha!). But as i’ve gotten older it helps me a lot if I’m going through something bad – i think the easiest way to deal with it is writing about it.
4. What would you say is your music career highlight to date?
One of the highlights has to be performing at the Birmingham LG Arena on the Forum Stage before the Katy Perry show. We also then had VIP tickets to watch her – and she puts on one hell of a show! Also supporting artists such as Brother & Bones, James Walsh (Starsailor) and Only Boys Aloud in a sold out Theatre was pretty amazing.
5. Who will we hear in your songs? What are your influences?
Jessie: I am obsessed with Stevie Nicks. I think I’ve seen every possible documentary on Fleetwood Mac there could ever be. I just love the story and chemistry around Buckingham/Nicks and i love the way she is, writes and portrays things. I think performing wise as well I’ve picked up a few of her traits – her passion for music just pours out of her when she sings and i love that.
Luke: Springsteen!! The whole reason i write how i do today is because of my influence of Bruce. Again, he has such a passion when he’s performing and his lyrics are always telling a story. He’s not writing a cheesy love song because they’re easy – he’s writing every single word from his experience and thats exactly what we do. We write songs based around our experience with each other and other people – so they mean that much more to us when performing them live.
6. What’s the most important thing you’d want to tell people about your current release?
Our song ‘Stay’ was actually the first song we’d ever performed together. We were in College studying Music in early 2013 when ‘Stay’ happened. Luke had written this beautiful song and performed it in a show our class had put on. This happened around the same time that Luke and I got together and started singing together. I then put some harmonies on the chorus and took over the second verse and there we had it.
This song is about the departure of someone that you never want to leave. It’s a very personal song and every single word is meant. I’m sure a lot of people out there – like us has had someone in there life leave and theres nothing they can do. Well this one is for you guys!
7. Who else can you recommend from your genre or local area for people to have a listen to?
We love listening to the stunning Ellie Makes Music. She is a folk singer/songwriter and her songs are just mesmerising. Also Jamie Willetts is well worth a listen. He has an official video on Youtube for his song Lighthouse and it is just beautiful!
8. Any gigs coming up?
We are currently starting our Schools Tour! We are going around several secondary schools all across South Wales and performing in Assembly’s for the pupils – so we may be coming to yours! We are supporting Leddra Chapman in Buffalo Bar November 6th which will be well worth coming along to!
9. Where can we find/follow you online?
