Fifty three years of Roberto Pla’s life has been dedicated to percussion, specifically to the Latin infused rhythms Pla has brought with him from his native town of Barranquilla off the Atlantic coast of Colombia. The salsa aficionado has found his way into recording studios worldwide, keeping unlikely company with The Clash’s Joe Strummer, Spanish pop band Radio Futura, Japanese duo The Frank Chickens and (perhaps most unlikely of all) heavy rock stalwarts Motorhead. He’s also found time to record with Kate Bush, perform with Adam Ant and guest for Wynton Marsalis in London.
On Wednesday 16th in September, Roberto Pla Latin Ensemble arrives at the PizzaExpress High Holborn, bringing with him a group big enough to populate a small sized village. His 12-piece band includes saxophones, trumpets and trombones and a full percussion section, as well as the vocalist Grace Rodson.
September 16, PizzaExpress Holborn, 8:30 pm
