Tomás Doncker is known for his refreshing and high-energy take of blues rock and experimental jazz and is capping off a tour in support of his latest album, Big Apple Blues, with an appearance at the first annual South by South Orange Festival (SxSO). The festival runsfrom 26-28 June and will feature some of the northeast’s best rock, indie, blues and jazz musicians. Doncker is helping to support the festival along with well-known bassist Mike Griot and In Living Colour drummer Will Calhoun.
Big Apple Blues took well-known blues/no wave artist Tomás Doncker to the musical stratosphere in 2014 when he partnered with acclaimed poet, Yusef Komunyakaa. Part of his appearance at SxSO is to celebrate the success of this break-out album. In Big Apple Blues, Doncker paired Yusef Komunyakaa’s powerful poetry with his own musical interpretations of that poetry to create a very unique work which has gained critical acclaim over the year since the album was released. Doncker hopes the album will help propel SxSO’s buzz, and vice versa.
With lots of blues, rock and southern flavor, SxSO promises be a great festival, especially with the likes of Tomás Doncker and Will Calhoun throwing their weight behind it. SxSO takes place in less than one week. For tickets and information go to the SxSO page. To hear the groundbreaking Big Apple Blues, go to Doncker’s Soundcloud page.
